What is a pet health plan?

A pet health plan is a recurring subscription for a published list of veterinary services. Most plans focus on preventive or routine care, such as vaccinations and parasite treatment. Some also include consultations, nurse checks, or diagnostic tests.

These products are not pet insurance. They do not underwrite unexpected illness or injury. They pay for specified services at a named practice or group, on the terms in the contract.

What Vets Compared compares

Monthly price alone is not enough. We compare the published package.

  • Price

Monthly or annual cost, joining fees, and whether the figure is exact or indicative.

  • Consultations

How many vet consults are included, whether they are routine only, and any fair-use limits.

  • Vaccinations

Primary courses, annual boosters, and extras such as kennel cough where published.

  • Parasite treatment

Whether medication is supplied, or only a prescription, plus any dispensing limits.

  • Diagnostics and screening

Wellness tests, sick-patient diagnostics, and whether external labs are extra.

  • Dental

Included dental work, a fixed-price scale and polish, or only a discount.

  • Other included benefits

Nurse checks, microchip, tele-vet, medication discounts, and home delivery.

  • Contract and exit terms

Minimum term, renewal, cancellation, moving practice, and what happens after death or rehoming.

Why headline price can mislead

Two plans at a similar monthly price can cover very different services. Normalised comparison exists so a lower figure is not mistaken for better cover.

  • Pet Health Club Essential: dental discount

A dental discount is not the same as an included scale and polish or a fixed dental price. The remaining clinic fee can still be the largest part of the bill.

  • Pet Health Club Essential (Puppy/Kitten): dental discount

A dental discount is not the same as an included scale and polish or a fixed dental price. The remaining clinic fee can still be the largest part of the bill.

  • Pet Health Club Essential (Rabbit): dental discount

A dental discount is not the same as an included scale and polish or a fixed dental price. The remaining clinic fee can still be the largest part of the bill.

  • Pet Health Club Plus: unlimited consultations

Consultations can be unlimited while diagnostics, treatment, and medication remain chargeable. The headline consult benefit is not the same as an included work-up.

What pet plans commonly include

Individual plans differ. These are the benefits that appear most often in the catalogue.

  • Vaccinations

Primary courses and/or annual boosters, depending on the plan.

  • Parasite prevention

Flea, worm or other parasite medication, or a prescription only.

  • Routine consultations

A set number of vet consults, unlimited consults, or none.

  • Nurse checks

Nurse appointments for weight, nails, or routine advice.

  • Microchip

A microchip if the pet is not already chipped.

  • Wellness screening

Urine, blood, or other routine tests on some higher tiers.

  • Dental

An included procedure, a fixed price, or a percentage discount.

  • Tele-vet

Remote advice on some plans, often with limits.

  • Medication discounts

A percentage off selected long-term medicines.

  • Home delivery

Posted parasite or repeat medication, sometimes with a fee.

Important exclusions and exit terms

Exit terms decide whether a cheap monthly price is easy to leave. Read minimum term, cancellation, and portability before you join.
  • Minimum term

Many plans run for 12 months. Leaving early can mean paying the remaining months or a recalculated fee.

  • Automatic renewal

Plans often renew unless you cancel in the notice window published by the provider.

  • Cancellation calculation

Some contracts charge unused months. Others reprice used benefits at standalone rates.

  • Unused benefit carry-over

Unused consults or dental benefits usually expire at the end of the year. They rarely roll over.

  • Moving practice

A plan tied to one clinic may not transfer if you change vets. Check portability before you move.

  • Portability

Group plans sometimes continue at another branch. Independent plans are often clinic-specific.

  • Death or rehoming

Some plans stop. Others still require the remaining term. The rule should be in the terms.

  • Fair-use restrictions

Unlimited consults can still exclude out-of-hours, referrals, or repeated visits for the same issue.

  • Out-of-hours and referrals

Night, weekend, and specialist visits are usually charged separately.

Are pet health plans worth it?

It depends on the plan, its price and which included services your pet will actually use.

A plan can be good value when you will use the included vaccinations, parasite care, and consults. Headline price alone does not determine value. Vets Compared does not reproduce unsupported provider saving claims. Monetary value or savings scores are only shown once they are backed by reliable standalone pricing data.

Pet health plan vs pet insurance

Pet health plan

  • Specified routine or preventive services
  • Often vaccinations and parasite care
  • Sometimes consultations or diagnostics
  • Not an insurance product

Pet insurance

  • Designed mainly for eligible unexpected illness or injury
  • A regulated insurance product
  • Routine preventive care is usually excluded

Why prices vary

  • Species. Dog, cat, and rabbit prices are often published separately.
  • Dog weight. Heavier dogs can cost more where parasite medication or dosing is included.
  • Age. Puppy, kitten, and senior bands can use different prices or surcharges.
  • Clinic or location. Some groups publish a national figure. Others set clinic-level prices.
  • Tier. Essential, plus, or premier versions change both price and coverage.
  • Optional add-ons. Extra parasite cover or dental upgrades sit on top of the headline price.

Why pet-plan transparency is changing

The Competition and Markets Authority reviewed the UK veterinary market for household pets. Its March 2026 final report found that information about pet care plans is often hard to compare, and that claimed savings are not always explained against standalone prices.

The decision includes clearer publication of plan prices and inclusions, standalone prices for the services inside a plan, and an explanation of how any claimed saving is calculated. Binding orders were expected by the end of September 2026. This page describes the published decision. It does not treat those orders as already in force.

CMA veterinary services market investigation, final report, 24 March 2026

How Vets Compared checks pet health plans

We read provider websites, clinic websites, terms and conditions, brochures or PDFs, checkout pages, administrator websites, and clinic confirmations where a practice has verified a listing.

Exact prices are published figures that match the published band. Indicative prices are shown when the catalogue figure can change by clinic, weight, or age. Unknown does not mean excluded. If a benefit is not evidenced, we say it is not listed.

Future commercial arrangements or commissions do not change factual coverage, terms, or this methodology.

Last catalogue check: 28 Aug 2026. Full methodology.

Pet health plan questions

What is a pet health plan?

A pet health plan is a recurring subscription for specified veterinary services, usually preventive care such as vaccinations and parasite treatment. Some plans also include consultations or diagnostics. It is not pet insurance.

Are pet health plans worth it?

It depends on the plan, its price, and which included services your pet will actually use. A low monthly price can still be poor value if coverage is narrow. Vets Compared does not repeat unsupported provider saving claims.

Is a pet health plan the same as pet insurance?

No. A pet health plan pays for specified routine or preventive services at a named practice. Pet insurance is a regulated product designed mainly for eligible unexpected illness or injury. Routine preventive care is usually excluded from insurance.

What do pet health plans usually include?

Common inclusions are vaccinations, parasite prevention, and sometimes routine consultations, nurse checks, a microchip, wellness tests, or a dental benefit. Individual plans differ, so compare the published list rather than the brand name.

Do pet health plans include vet consultations?

Some do. Others include only vaccinations and parasite care. Unlimited consultations can still leave diagnostics, medication, out-of-hours, and referral visits chargeable.

Can I cancel a pet health plan?

Most plans can be cancelled, but a minimum term and an early-exit calculation often apply. Read the cancellation rule before you join, including what happens if benefits have already been used.

Can I move a plan to another vet?

Only if the terms say the plan is transferable. Many clinic-specific plans end if you change practice. Some group plans can continue at another branch in the same group.

Why do heavier dogs sometimes cost more?

Where a plan includes parasite medication or weight-banded dosing, the published price can rise with bodyweight. Age and clinic can change the figure too. That is why we show a range or “from” price when a single number would be misleading.
